As a resource-intensive sector, telecom companies must take proactive steps to minimize waste generated from network infrastructure, data centers, devices, and office operations. The rapid advancement of communication technology places increasing demands on telecom operators, leading to higher consumption of materials—such as metals, biomass, and industrial minerals—along with greater energy use and waste production.
This is a significant concern, as material consumption is a major driver of the industry’s carbon footprint. According to the Circle Economy’s Circularity Report 2023, 70% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are directly linked to material use. Beyond emissions, excessive material consumption is responsible for over 90% of global biodiversity loss and water stress, highlighting the broader environmental impact of the telecom sector.
While there is growing awareness of circularity within the industry, current commitments remain insufficient. Many operators still provide limited transparency on waste management, underscoring the need for stronger ambition and clearer reporting to drive meaningful change.
